How DAF Trucks Come to Existence DAF Trucks was originally founded in 1928 by Hubert Van Doorne with Heunges as an investor and co-founder of the company. Van Doorne worked in a very small workshop with his brother until the company slowly began to be established. The company was originally called the Trailer Can Doorne Factory; however, the name of the company was shortened to DAF Trucks. In 1936, Van Doorne, with his brother, took full control of the company and began building the company even further. During the Second World War, there were a number of trucks and luxury cars. This is presented as a great opportunity for companies and Van Doorne to take advantage of this fact. The company began producing various trucks, buses and trailers during 1949. During this period, the name of the company was also changed to the Van Doorne Automotive Factory. The first truck produced by a company called DAF A30. This truck is a big success. For several years, Van Doorne began designing and producing innovative trucks that succeeded in capturing the market. The trucks are made more popular because of belt-driven technology. In 1975, the company sold its car division to the big car giant, Volvo Cars. 1987, a merger occurred with Leyland Trucks which led to further growth and expansion for companies in the large and strong European market. In 1990, the company was separated from its bus division. The bus division is now known as United Bus. This separation meant that DAF was only left with its truck division. In 1993, the company faced several financial difficulties which eventually caused the company to go hino dutro bankrupt. The company was later revived through a purchase in 1996 by PACCAR. In 1998, the company was returned to Leyland because PACCAR had bought Leyland too. Thus, the Lefland DAF truck was born.
